Day 108: “I don’t even know the meaning of the word loser…”

This title comes from the episode of Outnumbered I’m watching. It has nothing to do with anything.

Today has been a nice day overall. Work was good, got a lot done in the afternoon. The two lessons I taught were ok – maths in particular, which covered all types of angles, and how to find missing angles on straight lines, in triangles and quadrilaterals. This all followed work on the 6 times table and prime numbers. I really enjoy pushing the children to improve their understanding and today was the first time in a while that all of that group have left that room feeling great about maths – previously, there have always been one or two children who struggle with the concept and only just get there as time ticks away and the lesson is over.

That’s the massive downside to having a group you only see for an hour a day. You can never think, “I’ll just carry this on for five minutes this afternoon,” because that opportunity is gone. So for those children who take a little longer to settle into work, and need more time to process ideas, that additional time can be vital in improving.

Anyway, the day ended with band as usual on Thursday – I say usual, we don’t meet over school holidays so we’ve had two weeks off. All was lovely, some good playing. I wasn’t totally fabulous as my head still isn’t wonderfully clear from my migraine, but they are an understanding bunch – they would have to be putting up with my conducting abilities…
