222: Why are some sports given more worth than others?

I allow BBC News to send me notifications on my phone and tablet. This can be both a curse and a blessing. I don’t really watch the news much these days, preferring instead to not have that slice of misery in my life.

However, it has struck me that there is an element of unfairness about what these notifications tell me.

Tonight, I found out about a medal in the Olympics in synchronised diving. It was bronze. All well and good. I didn’t hear about the equal achievement, a bronze medal, in trap shooting by the same method.

Why is this?

Could it be that more people care about diving, of all things? Could it be that one of the divers was Tom Daley, well known and popular? I don’t know but I think all sports should be given equal treatment. Every medal is an achievement and should be celebrated in the same way.
