165: What is wrong with the new Top Gear?

In essence, not that much.

You know what, I can see that it might get better. This had so much of the “brand new”-ness to it that it distracted from everything. It also felt a bit like a tribute act – like Chris was doing a Clarkson impression a lot of the time. Also,

The first episode had so much of the “brand new”-ness to it that it distracted from everything.

Also, why on Earth announce 6 hosts when there really is only two?! It’s basically the Chris and Matt show. Sabine has featured twice, Eddie Jordan once… Odd.

My main problem with it, after three episodes, is my unshakable feeling that Chris is doing an impression of Clarkson – especially during voice overs on the filmed parts. He absolutely isn’t speaking naturally. Chris Harris also sounds like Quentin Wilson from Top Gear of old… Matt just doesn’t appear comfortable at all.

It still needs a few episodes to settle down and when it eventually does – when they get more into it and rely less on the old format – it might be decent again.

I’ll still watch it to see how it evolves…
