In twenty days time, this country goes to the polls for the first time in a generation to vote in a referendum about our future position within the European Union. The question on the polling card will be this:
Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?
With the options being:
Remain a member of the European Union
Leave the European Union
I’m likely to vote remain, mostly because an unequivocal vote that way will – in an ideal world – put to bed the argument once and for all, and be the final nail in the coffin for those people who wish to leave.
I believe that any vote to leave will create turmoil for a long time and we, more than likely, will be far worse off during that period. After that period, we may be in a better position, but the costs will be so astronomically high in the meantime that we won’t see that benefit probably for a further extended period of time, as the damage that the interim period will have caused will need some form of repair.
Before we know it, a quarter of a century will have passed and many other countries will have taken over us. As people have said, we will go to the back of the queue for everything.
The final thing that puts me off leaving is the absolute unknown element of it. Nobody can provide a straight answer as to what will happen, because, simply, nobody knows.
I will be voting to remain part of the EU.
