The 50th Anniversary Doctor Who Special was, in one word, amazing. By far the best episode for a long while and answering many questions yet setting up things for the future.
A whole planet is now missing for the Doctor to hunt for – and while that might not take 50 years, there’s the question about what will happen at the end of Peter Capaldi‘s run as the doctor. After all, he is the 13th incarnation of the character and, in theory, at the end of the regenerations. It was good to see his brief cameo too…
I really don’t want to write about the whole thing, but it lived up to the hype and is a great example of everything that is good about the show.
Right through, there were little touches for those who wanted to look closer. Ian Chesterton as chair of governors at Clara‘s school right at the start. The TARDIS at the side of the road. The pinboard in the Black Archive, a room that effectively was a time capsule of Doctordom, with plenty to freeze-frame on a repeat viewing.

To celebrate, Google produced a Google Game, which you can play here: Doctor Who Google Doodle.
A truly fitting celebration for a British institution.
