Surely there are some days which don’t actually conform to the usual time space continuum. Today has felt at least 20% quicker then usual and, as a result, not a lot has got done.
My Literacy lesson today, the beginning of a three week look at instructions and their features, was about playing card games based on given instructions. It’s a fun introduction to learning as the 6 games are not ones they have often encountered by this age. But also, they are written in different ways – some have very good instructions, some have terrible ones. The activity is designed to tease out the aspects of good instructions. However, more work was needed on this as the demonstration game took an age to play – they just didn’t seem to pick up on what was required from them very quickly, despite being taken through every action in a step by step way, and allowing their friends around them to help with their choices.
Numeracy is the lesson echoing around the country. No matter where you are in a Primary School, which year group, which teacher, I can guarantee that a place value lesson has taken place recently. This can involve the writing of numbers based on words, building up numbers from cards, and then thoroughly forgetting that a zero is necessary in numbers like 83021 so that it doesn’t say 8321… I can guarantee that there’ll be one child in every class that will make that mistake.
The afternoon involved some map work. Our main topic is based all around rivers. It’s only natural that we look first at rivers in our country and around the world. To be honest, I love maps. They are wonderful things showing so much information. Except, that’s quite a confusing thing if you aren’t used to seeing them. So that was an interesting conversation, explaining which lines were rivers, and which were roads…
The rest of the day has involved me working hard to complete the set up of our class blogs and various other jobs. There is one job I’m sick of seeing on my list and it has to be a priority for the rest of the week. This is a data analysis thing which is just hanging over me.
You can tell I’m back at work, I have things to write about!
We grabbed a cache (GC3EYPZ) too as today was a calendar gap.
