Day 125: Geocaching For Sherbet Fountains

Today we went for a geocaching walk. Mrs Pitts caught the sun a bit… she is currently lobsterfied next to me.

Here are the caches we found:

GC2E1RY: Mr Beeching Takes Rothwell. This was a little tricky, but mainly because we hadn’t been there before and there were a range of different paths. Beginning a day covered in scratches and bleeding wasn’t a good start.

GC49G0V: Off Your Trolley! – Rothwell. Off Your Trolley caches are generally placed near supermarkets. This was in the car park of Morrisons. A nice easy find that Mrs Pitts went for on her own with I sorted my arms out!

GC3E15D: Sidetracked – by Grace @ Crossgates. Moving on from Morrisons, we went to the local railway station. The Sidetracked series are all based by train lines. This was another easy find as it was located almost in front of us.

GC3XWZK: Off yer Trolley! Another supermarket, this time a Tesco Express. This was harder to find, mainly due again to not knowing the area and forgetting that caches can sometimes be up above and not on the ground…

GC3YZQA: Bolted!! We abandoned this one. Firstly, it was attached to a gate or fence in the owner’s garden which isn’t a problem but looks dodgy. Particularly as, secondly, there had been a warning of a nosy curtain twitching neighbour near by. Once a dog started barking and a local appeared out of another house, it was best to not stay in the area.

Then we went to our main walk for the day, which I had wanted to log using the endomondo app, but it failed with a chunk still to go.

GC3CWHQ: Sherbet Fountain 2. This one was at the base of a small bush, very straightforward.

GC3CWJ3: Sherbet Fountain 3. This one was hidden behind some stones which had been made into steps to the public footpath.

GC3D95T: Sherbet Fountain 4. I can’t really remember this one to be honest. Apparently it was in the bark of a tree.

GC1Z72Y: Zadok the Priest. We spent ages here and couldn’t find this one. It’s not often that we miss them out. Two in a day is rare.

GC3D97V: Sherbet Fountain 5. Continuing the series, the Zadok cache was placed in between 4 and 5, this was a return to form and was inside a log.

GC3D988: Sherbet Fountain 6. This was one of the easiest to find, just laying on the ground.

GC3D98J: Sherbet Fountain 7. This was underneath a fence. Up to this point, we hadn’t really seen another person. Over the whole route we probably encountered no more than 10 people.

GC3D995: Sherbet Fountain 8. This followed a large drag up a hill through a field towards civilisation once more.

GC3D99K: Sherbet Fountain 9. The last of the series before a bonus – there were clues in each cache to the location of a final cache. The whole walk had involved these easy to find, lovely caches.

GC3D99V:Sherbet Fountain Bonus. The bonus itself was next to a little stream. Thankfully, and quite amazingly, given the weather we’ve had recently, the stream was low and we had no problems. Previous cachers had noted how muddy it was. Unlucky for them.

GC244D3: Red Hall 2. This was nearby and on the way back to the car. However, we couldn’t find this one either, making three that we hadn’t found today – fairly unheard of for us.

GC1Y9P4: Alphabet Soup. This was the only cache we had intended to visit today really. This cache involves visiting other caches, one for each letter of the alphabet. We’ve had this list organised for this cache for ages – possibly over a year now. Our qualifying caches, along with when we found them and a few reasons for choosing them, are listed below:

• GC1XJNQ – Dracula – 18th April 2011 – Our 200th cache.
• GCMGZN – Elland Bridge – 8th February 2011 – Can’t remember!
• GC2MQYG – F is for……Flookbird – 22nd July 2011 – A stunning location, fabulous. Cache 350 for us.
• GC26X57 – Giardini Italiani – Scarborough – 18th April 2011 – Great sea view.
• GC1BNY0 – Harbourside Quest – 18th April 2011 – A lovely walk. We did this for All About Yorkshire North.
• GC1XJXR – Is There Anyone Out There??? – 23rd January 2011 – A cracking puzzle.
• GC2W7DQ – Joneses Jolly Jaunt 2 : Attack of the Cones – 26th May 2011 – Lots of blood lost on this one.
• GC1Z849 – King George’s Field – 30th January 2011 – A nice little hide.
• GC16Y8E – LQ:W YORKS – Willmer Green – 7th August 2011 – An isolated cache. We did three LQs in one day.
• GC1XXRD – Mick’s Mystery – 10th August 2011 – Cache 399 and a great puzzle.
• GC2F4HJ – Notton Navigation Bonus – 9th April 2011 – A fabulous series.
• GC2TAV6 – Old Sweeties # A Tuck Shop Lucky Bag – 3rd July 2011 – Another good series.
• GC2F9PJ – Puzzle Puzzle – 31st July 2011 – Such an enjoyable cache to solve and find.
• GC21DCC – QUANDARY IN A QUARRY – 23rd April 2011 – Our first 1/5 cache.
• GC224MN – Red House – Coin Bank – 19th September 2010 – Our first cache find ever.
• GC25CRH – Stud on the Corner – 13th February 2011 – A very good hide.
• GC1DH9P – Tunnel Of Gloom – 7th May 2011 – A good hide in an unusual place.
• GC2NJJX – Upper Batley H2O – 22nd February 2011 – A good hide.
• GC2RN3N – Volcano. – 10th April 2011 – A nice little puzzle.
• GC1905V – What a North and South – 31st July 2011 – An unusual location.
• GC136T4 – XMAS ISTHMUS – 18th August 2011 – A great place and puzzle.
• GC1WHB3 – You’re Bard – 25th February 2011 – Found on a day trip out.
• GC2MT9N – Z is for Zippy-Dora – 18th August 2011 – A lovely end to the Alphabet Series.

All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable day.
