217: What happened in the 2016 German Grand Prix?

They say you can’t have too much of a good thing, and this being the longest ever Formula One season you would hope that would apply.

However, in the last 8 weeks, we have seen 6 races. Some of them have been ok, a couple have been very good, but a couple have also been dull.

This year’s German Grand Prix was an example of a poor F1 race.

Lewis Hamilton extended his championship lead even further after grabbing it last weekend, putting him in an excellent, commanding lead – overturning a 43 point deficit – heading into a long summer break.

The reigning world champion benefited from Nico Rosberg’s poor start from pole, grasping the lead into the first corner and never looking back from that point on. This means he has now won 6 out of the last 7 races; his points lead now 19 with 9 races still to come.

The Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo finished second with his team-mate Max Verstappen completing the podium in third.

One moment of excitement came when Rosberg attempted to overtake Verstappen at the hairpin. Rosberg dived down the inside of him with Verstappen seemingly moving in the braking zone but leaving enough room. Inevitably, there was an investigation and Rosberg was handed a five-second penalty at his final pit stop. An error with the pit crew though meant that this was over 8 seconds in the end…

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel finished fifth with the other scarlet car of Kimi Raikkonen coming sixth. Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg was seventh ahead of McLaren’s Jenson Button. Valtteri Bottas ended up ninth for Williams after losing pace during a long final stint on the soft tyre.

The other Force India of Sergio Perez snatched 10th from Fernando Alonso with three laps to go rounding off the points winners.
