185: What do bad penalties look like?

In a rare fit of interest in football, I watched the latter part of the Germany-Italy match this evening. It finished 1-1 and remained so after extra time leading to a penalty shoot out.

I’m not overly keen on that being the ultimate decisive event in a tournament but concede there’s little other option.

The ones tonight however were very entertaining. For a start there were a lot of them – Germany eventually prevailed but only after a lot of toing and froing.

The overall bizarre nature of the takers though grabbed me. Some performed an interpretive dance before striking the ball. One virtually went as far as producing puppets to recreate that goat bit in the Sound Of Music before flailing wildly at the ball.

I exaggerate, of course.

It won’t be long though before countries start to field gigantic goalkeepers who are 8 feet high and 24 feet wide and the whole sport of football becomes redundant as a result.
