180: When will England win a major football tournament?

I, being a person who understands statistics, would never rule out a victory in a major tournament, but it looks ever less likely. This year marks 50 years since we won the World Cup, for instance.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. Bright young stars are always there, and it seems that Euro 2016 came a little too early for some of the younger members of the squad. If you’re good enough, you’re old enough the saying goes though but tonight the players weren’t anywhere near good enough as they lost to Iceland 2-1.

As Andy Murray has shown however, time will wait, but records can be broken. In 2013, he became the first British man since Fred Perry to win Wimbledon since 1936 and the first Scot to do so since 1896. The tennis world waited 77 years to see that happen…

English football will have a resurgence eventually. The England team of 1966 overcame a horrible defeat to USA in 1950 – on a par with losing to Iceland this evening. 2032 could be a good year!

Never say never. It will happen. I just don’t know when.
