I can’t think of much that has happened today. It has flown by. I have resolved a few ICT things in school and learnt a lot about eyebrow waxing.
I decided to clear the afternoon of lessons and work on listening skills with my class by playing some barrier games. The children showed me they could certainly work together – a bit of a surprise really – but also could listen to each other and recreate both a complex poster and construct two dimensional and three dimensional models from instructions alone.
I likened the skills needed to a Lego instruction booklet. I explained how Lego was sold all over the world and so couldn’t rely on words to demonstrate how to build models, therefore images are used. Also, the amount of building in each step is quite small, limited to around 6 or 7 pieces in my experience so that it is easy to see what is needed next.
A few issues appeared: sometimes too much information was being shared to the builder/drawer and they were becoming confused as a result. These children refined their approaches over the hour or so and the results improved in leaps and bounds also.
That was the highlight of the day really. After school has been a blur, visiting a few shops for essentials and fish food, and getting nothing done at all.
