Formula One 2010 – Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Last week, I wrote about the Brazilian Grand Prix and the ways in which Fernando Alonso could win the World Championship at that race – him being the only one of the then five contenders that could do it.

This weekend sees the 19th and final race of the Formula One season and four drivers are still in with a chance of winning the title, with current World Champion Jenson Button now eliminated from the title race after Brazil.

The current standings look like this:

  1. Fernando Alonso, 246 points
  2. Mark Webber, 238 points
  3. Sebastian Vettel, 231 points
  4. Lewis Hamilton, 222 points

So… here’s how each of them can win the title this weekend.

Fernando Alonso wins the title if he:

  • is first or second;
  • is third or fourth and Mark Webber doesn’t win;
  • is fifth and neither Red Bull driver wins;
  • is sixth, with Webber outside the top two and Sebastian Vettel not winning;
  • is seventh or eighth with Webber off the podium and Vettel not winning;
  • is ninth with Webber outside the top four and Vettel outside the top two;
  • is tenth with Webber outside the top five and Vettel outside the top two;
  • doesn’t score, Webber doesn’t finish in the top five, Vettel doesn’t finish in the top two and Lewis Hamilton doesn’t win.

Mark Webber wins the title if he:

  • is first with Alonso third or lower;
  • is second, with Alonso outside the top five and Vettel not winning;
  • is third, with Alonso outside the top six and Vettel not winning;
  • is fourth, with Alonso outside the top eight and Vettel not winning;
  • is fifth, with Alonso tenth or lower and Vettel outside the top two.

Sebastian Vettel wins the title if he:

  • is first, with Alonso outside the top four;
  • is second, with Alonso outside the top eight and Webber outside the top four.

Lewis Hamilton wins the title if he:

  • is first, with Alonso failing to score, Webber outside the top five and Vettel outside the top two.

I’m so looking forward to this…
