Golf Handicaps

Golf Handicaps are by far one of the most difficult things for new golfers and non-golfers to understand. These handicaps can help golfers to understand what is going on and what is expected of them.

What is a golf handicap?

If you are a newer golfer trying to set your handicap in the right direction, start by understanding the most common golf handicaps and the amount of golf needed to get to these, start by also understanding foresight sports. This will help you understand the significance of the numbers and why the difference between numbers may not always be apparent.

We have included some of the commonly used golf handicaps below. We will look at more details about how golf handicaps work in the sections that follow.

General Golf Handicaps General golf handicaps are not exact, but they are helpful. These are used for several purposes, mostly determining how to measure the abilities of a golfer. For instance, a golfer with a 300-pound handicap may be a high handicap when playing short games, but a low handicap when playing golf a few lengths. Or a golfer with a 300-pound handicap may be a high handicap when golfing in the rough, but a low handicap when golfing well. General handicaps are also used to determine if a golf course is suitable for a particular type of golfer. It’s not that you can’t tee off on a rough course, but you will have a much more difficult time doing so on a course with good fairways and lots of bunkers, or on a course that is a little too long and technical. General handicaps determine whether you will have a high handicap for playing golf, but a low handicap for playing golf well. The most useful type of handicap is the handicap from one to five, which provides a rough approximation of the difficulty of a course. For example, a six handicap would have a difficult fairway and have multiple bunkers; a seven handicap would have a longer fairway with fewer bunkers, but also has a few long holes, and a seven handicap would have the same length of fairway as a five handicap, and several more short holes. The handicap is shown on the scorecard. You can see a handicap for any scorecard on the front of the scorecard. It is not possible to use a handicap to calculate your personal handicap or to know the average handicap of the group, but your handicap is a good way to determine how you will play.
