Once more, most of today was spent doing stuff for school. Although we found 4 geocaches today, 1 of which nearly killed me, another of which was one we had tried to find twice before and failed. 991 is the total now – 1000 is at our fingertips. I forgot to mention too that yesterday broke our record for most finds in a month. This was 141 but now stands at 146. I had thought earlier in the month that we wouldn’t break this, but clearly I was wrong (not for the first time, and it won’t be the last).
The souvenir event is nearly over. I love how my quilt is building up – just 4 days left.
The evening was spent at the Leeds Grand Theatre watching Hairspray, not something I’ve seen before. I knew a couple of the songs though as Mrs Pitts has the CD. All was lovely, really very good. Mark Benton is the man in drag for this tour and he was excellent, but Freya Sutton really stood out as Tracy.
Hairspray is a musical with music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, based on the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray. The songs include 1960s-style dance music and “downtown” rhythm and blues. In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s.
To be honest, I knew none of this before going to see it, but the story is told so well that you can go and see it with no knowledge of the tail beforehand. The music, the singing, the choreography were all stunning. A fun, fab night.
