I&#8217;ve merged them together now to make life easier.<br \/>\nAll the dates that the entries were originally published and posted comments have been preserved.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>This sounds like a bit of a laugh&#8230;<br \/>\n<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/thomasjpitts.co.uk\/hsx\/2004\/12\/follow-up-to-spam-get-your-own-back.html\">see this entry for more details<\/a>.<br \/>\n<em><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Internet <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Web portal\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Web_portal\">portal<\/a> <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Lycos\" rel=\"homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lycos.com\/\">Lycos<\/a> has made a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Screensaver\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Screensaver\">screensaver<\/a> that endlessly requests data from sites that sell the goods and services mentioned in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"E-mail spam\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/E-mail_spam\">spam e-mail<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Lycos hopes will it make the monthly <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Bandwidth (computing)\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bandwidth_%28computing%29\">bandwidth<\/a> bills of spammers soar by keeping their servers running flat out.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The net firm estimates that if enough people sign up and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Uploading and downloading\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uploading_and_downloading\">download<\/a> the tool, spammers could end up paying to send out <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Terabyte\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terabyte\">terabytes<\/a> of data.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><!--more--> <em>&#8220;We&#8217;ve never really solved the big problem of spam which is that its so damn cheap and easy to do,&#8221; said Malte Pollmann, spokesman for <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Lycos Europe\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lycos_Europe\">Lycos Europe<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;In the past we have built up the spam <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"E-mail filtering\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/E-mail_filtering\">filtering<\/a> systems for our users,&#8221; he said, &#8220;but now we are going to go one step further.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We&#8217;ve found a way to make it much higher cost for spammers by putting a load on their servers.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>By getting thousands of people to download and use the screensaver, Lycos hopes to get spamming <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Website\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Website\">websites<\/a> constantly running at almost full capacity.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mr Pollmann said there was no intention to stop the spam websites working by subjecting them with too much data to cope with.<br \/>\nHe said the screensaver had been carefully written to ensure that the amount of traffic it generated from each user did not overload the web.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Every single user will contribute three to four megabytes per day,&#8221; he said, &#8220;about one <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"MP3\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MP3\">MP3<\/a> file.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But, he said, if enough people sign up spamming websites could be force to pay for gigabytes of traffic every single day.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Lycos did not want to use e-mail to fight back, said Mr Pollmann.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;That would be fighting one bad thing with another bad thing,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The sites being targeted are those mentioned in spam e-mail messages and which sell the goods and services on offer.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Typically these sites are different to those that used to send out spam e-mail and they typically only get a few thousand visitors per day.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The list of sites that the screensaver will target is taken from real-time blacklists generated by organisations such as Spamcop. To limit the chance of mistakes being made, Lycos is using people to ensure that the sites are selling spam goods.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As these sites rarely use advertising to offset hosting costs, the burden of high-bandwidth bills could make spam too expensive, said Mr Pollmann.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sites will also slow down under the weight of data requests.
