Richard Trench Gascoigne took up ownership of the house following the death of his aunt Elizabeth, wife of\u00a0Lord Ashtown, in 1893. It became the main residence of the Gascoigne family after the death of Richard&#8217;s father Frederick at\u00a0Parlington Hall\u00a0in 1905.<\/p>\n<p>The house is sited on part of the Gascoigne\u00a0estate, and was presented for public access to the\u00a0City of Leeds\u00a0in 1968 by Sir Alvary Gascoigne and his wife, last of the Gascoigne family, whose roots were at Parlington Hall<span style=\"font-size: 11px;\">.\u00a0<\/span>The estate is now home to an extensive collection of rare and endangered bird species and a herd of\u00a0red deer\u00a0and\u00a0llamas. There is a large expanse of\u00a0grassland\u00a0in front of the bird\u00a0sanctuary, typically used during the summer months for\u00a0ball games\u00a0and\u00a0picnics.
