The\u00a0city\u00a0has a rich heritage and has provided the backdrop to major political events throughout much of its two millennia of existence. The city offers a wealth of historic attractions, of which\u00a0York Minster\u00a0is the most prominent, and a variety of cultural and sporting activities.\u00a0The city was founded by the\u00a0Romans\u00a0in 71\u00a0AD, under the name of\u00a0Eboracum. It became in turn the capital of the Roman province of\u00a0Britannia Inferior, and of the kingdoms of\u00a0Northumbria\u00a0and\u00a0Jorvik. In the\u00a0Middle Ages, York grew as a major wool trading centre and became the capital of the northern\u00a0ecclesiastical province\u00a0of the\u00a0Church of England, a role it has retained.<span style=\"font-size: 11px;\">\u00a0<\/span>In the 19th\u00a0century York became a hub of the railway network and a confectionery manufacturing centre. In recent decades, the economy of York has moved from being dominated by its confectionery and railway-related industries to one that provides services.
