I remember him being freed, although it didn&#8217;t mean a lot to a white 7 year old in a country that appeared to that 7 year old not to be all that fussed about what colour skin you had. I only really became aware of his impact and influence much later in life as his role changed in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"South Africa\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">South Africa<\/a>. Even then, I still don&#8217;t understand people who can&#8217;t see beyond the colour of someone&#8217;s skin.<\/p>\n<p>At 95, his death isn&#8217;t much of a surprise. He had been frail for a long time according to media and it has been one of those events that would happen sooner or later. The immediacy of the polished obituaries earlier showed that preparations have been ongoing for a while &#8211; although I&#8217;m sure that news outlets have a bank of pre-prepared obituaries for any number of famous people&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Work today consisted of singing and biscuit decorating.
