Unusually.

After what seemed like an age – 17 days in fact – I returned to work. Not for long though, the next holiday isn’t far over the horizon.

I generally don’t feel like that normally. Today was one of the better days recently at work, the most I’ve enjoyed teaching for a while if I’m honest. There are a few reasons for that, none of which I can really discuss here – the nature of the job is the main one. It’s pretty relentless and the further you go into a career, the harder the it appears to keep the momentum going.

The second half of last half term was a killer for me. I was on my knees. Partly because I never got on top of work due to falling behind in the half term break when I was ill, partly because of changes being introduced in school which meant running a few things for the first time, partly because the kids themselves look to you to keep things going and you simply can’t do it if you’re on at your best. I think that’s why I found the end of the spring term so hard and the beginning of this term like a total fresh start. September is always interesting because you are usually at your peak after a good break, but your class will have had 6 weeks of doing very little – some won’t have written a thing over the time they are off as an example.

In many ways, today felt like one of those Septembers – getting them working, keeping them focussed – but with the advantages of knowing each of them really well.

Anyway, today was fairly good day, even though it didn’t seem like it at the time. I remember why I love my job despite the constant moaning about it.

We had a governor’s meeting about one item, which was very quick. However, spending nearly ten hours at work really messes up the evening. It feels very early still, when it’s time for me to stop waffling and keep Mrs Pitts awake with my snoring…

Sleep well you lot.

After what seemed like an age – 17 days in fact – I returned to work.
