While out Geocaching<\/a> yesterday, we completed a cache that asked us to visit the viewing area by the side of Emley Moor transmitting station<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The tower, a symbol of Yorkshire<\/a> and the tallest freestanding structure<\/a> in the country at a height of 1,084 feet<\/a> (330\u00a0m)\u00a0and, at the time of writing, the 25th tallest tower<\/a> in the world,\u00a0is the third structure to have occupied the site.<\/p>\n

The structure is a tapered, reinforced concrete<\/a>\u00a0tower. Reaching the Tower Room at the top of the concrete part of the tower at 900 feet (274\u00a0m) involves a seven-minute journey by lift. The antenna structure above this is a further 184 feet (56\u00a0m). Its foundations penetrate 20 feet (6\u00a0m) into the ground and the whole structure, including foundations, weighs 11,200 tonnes.<\/p>\n
